Ecological Cotton Fabrics

These products are handcrafted from yarns made of 100% natural virgin cotton. Some of the yarns are spun by hand on spinning wheels by the Zapotec women in small villages throughout the central valleys of Oaxaca. This is a traditional craft that has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. The women spin their yarns in between household chores in their spare time, taking care of the children, cooking the food, feeding the chickens, hand grinding the corn for tortillas etc. The yarns are then woven on old wooden looms and some on old mechanical looms. Your purchase of these products helps maintain their dignified indigenous way of life.

Naturally-Colored and Green Cotton Textiles

Our principal raw material is cotton. Naturally colored cotton refers to a natural cotton fiber that grows in colors that are thrilling naturalists and the environmentally conscious segments of the textile market. It grows from seeds preserved over the centuries by indigenous people living along the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. Handspun and hand-woven since pre-Colombian times, we are now encouraging the farmers to increase the cultivation of their variety of Natural Brown Cotton. We offer natural-colored ecological textiles in white, beige, brown and green - the colors that grow naturally on the cotton plant. Cotton is a renewable resource, completely biodegradable and is available in the form of Fiber, Yarns and Textile Products. These natural colored and green cottons are produced without the use of dyes, chemicals, water or combustible fuel and therefore have no harmful impact on the ecology. This is our commitment to the environment.

Green Cotton: defined by the National Cotton Council as Cotton that has only been washed with a natural-based soap and not bleached, dyed (unless with natural dyes), or treated with other finishing chemicals. Green refers to processing, not the growing practices.

Naturally Colored Cotton: defined as Cotton that grows naturally in color (i.e. the color is achieved without dyes).

Conventional colors are usually obtained by dyeing. Dyeing uses up to 85% of all the energy used to produce textiles and produces more pollution than any other phase of textile manufacturing. Dyeing also uses large quantities of toxic dyes and chemicals which pollute our land and water. Natural Colored Cotton has high quality light and wash fastness, saves resources and prevents pollution. The processing of the fiber into yarns and other finished products is done without using bleaches, dyes and formaldehyde, therefore reducing pollution and conserving natural resources by not using the water and energy that these steps normally require.
